Can you guess who this is?
???????? |
Look at the photo
Do you know who this is?
Was he an actor
and worked in Show Biz?
Maybe a Senator,
a head of the State!
Naw, that job is too tricky
and not really that great.
Or was he a doctor?
Well, he was of some kind
I'm giving you hints
by talking in rhyme!
Maybe you've guessed it
so I'll now end my ruse
He's my favorite author......
the endearing Dr. Seuss!
One of my all time FAVORITE Seuss books |
And so on with Mesmerizing Medium Monday!
You may know that Dr. Seuss's real name was Theodor (no e) Seuss Geisel . Maybe you didn't know (I didn't) that "Seuss" was his mother's maiden name as well as his middle name. He started using "Suess" instead of "Geisel" back in his college days when he was caught with bootleg gin and thus was ousted as editor-in-chief of Dartmouth's humor magazine. To sneakily continue, he used several pen names, including "Seuss". He threw "Dr." on the front later in honor of his father's wish that he would earn a PhD which he didn't do, but much later did receive honorary doctorates. So much for higher education! There are a bunch more interesting
facts about Theodor if you latch onto this link...

So many rhymes, so little thymes :) |
This book is so great! I love "Happy Birthday to You!" (see above photo) but "One fish" is a mini smorgasbord of bit-sized rhymey (Dr. Seuss taught me that's it's okay to make up words which is one of the reasons why I love his books) stories that are just plain fun. It does, however, sneak in learning but that's okay because you're so engrossed in the foolery that you don't even realize it.
The word-play is such a treat that you almost forget about the Dr.'s illustrations, which you don't really because they account for much of the whimsy you feel while ogling the pages. An accomplished author and artist...what a twofer!
"Hey Pop!" |
The are so many Seuss books to cover that it's hard to decide but I picked "Horton Hatches the Egg" for my finale' because Horton is just awesome. What a story of dedication and endurance! While reading, you really wish that that dang Mazie would make it to someone's dinner table, nicely browned with a side of potatoes. However, I don't think that Horton wanted that and you really have to agree with him because he's so awesome :) I think society should take some lessons from Horton because of his motto, "I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful one-hundred percent." If everyone tried to emulate that sentiment, this world would be "Seuss-pendence"!
